Want to B an Intern with Us?

We are currently looking for some dynamic people that want to help pedal it forward with the 2-wheel revolution we've got going. We are growing at every turn and would love some help. We are a nonprofit, though, so interning with us would be more about spreading the movement and joining a good cause, along with some great karma, and a stipend. If you are a student, we will also write a really stellar, glowing letter of reference for you (as long as you rock at what you do). :)
Here are the details...

A Cyclist's Best Friend

So, we have seen b-cyclers with their pups in the basket on their short jaunts around downtown, but can you imagine trekking 1300 miles with your dog? Maybe station to station or across town, but not sure about going cross-country This is pretty neat. We would say that they will have a pretty special bond for life.

Interesting Facts

Since we have reached the halfway mark in Bike Month 2012, we thought we would enlighten you all with some pretty interesting statitics from the League of American Bicyclists.

-Short trips are up to three times more polluting per mile than long trips.
-Whenbicycling is substituted for short autotrips, 3.6 pounds of pollutants per mile are not emitted into the atmosphere.

-Ten bikes can park in the space used by a single motor vehicle.

-Over 66% of the adult US population is overweight and 32% of the US is obese, costing our nation $68 billion in health care and personal costs annually.

-One child out of every 4 is overweight in America. Bicyclists generally accomplish more work. There’s nothing like riding to stimulate circulation, relieve stress, allow creative thought and establish a positive attitude toward oneself and one’s environment.

-80% of people who switch from sedentary commuting to cycling improve their heart, lungs and blood vessels greatly in  6-8 weeks, so they get sick much less often.

-For a 180 pound man, a 10 mile round trip bike commute burns 400 calories. For a 130-pound woman this same commute burns 300 calories.

-In some large urban areas, it is possible to save over $200 per month on parking alone.

-If the real taxpayer subsidy of autoswere reflected in fuel taxes, a gallon of gasoline might cost as much as $9.00.
-Ten bikes can park in the space taken by a single motor vehicle.

Pretty interesting, huh? Gives you a lot to think about.

***PS- Don't forget Bike to Work Day is TOMORROW!

B-Smart!

The weather is supposed to clear up this weekend so we know many of you will be hopping on b-cycles. We wanted to share this picture with you all in honor of National Bike Month.

B-smart. Protect your brain. Wear a helmet!

AND, if you do not have one, they are available at the HUB in Hemisfair Park. So, hop on over and dock your b-cycle at the Hub station and grab a helmet.

Happy Friday!

Overcoming Bike Commuter Excuses

Let's face it. We have all been guilty of it.

We live in South Texas, it's too hot... I have to wear a suit to work... I have a meeting and don't want to be sweaty.... There is no where to park. It would take me too long... the list could go on and on.

Well, the greatness of bike sharing is that it automatically takes care of a lot of these excuses, just by its sheer nature. Below is a list from the League of American Bicyclists that we thought was super helpful, and the best part is, b-cycling automatically rids you of some of the inconveniences that become your excuses, ie- no bike parking. Take a look and share it with your friends and family. Bike share is an awesome solution to many of the common reasons as to why people do not bike more.

We would love to feature them on the blog throughout the rest of the month to share with everyone "where we b" in SA. If you are interested, please email a story, picture, etc. to: kat.gainey@sanantoniobikeshare.org.
